Day 4, ABCs of Gratitude: The Dollar

It's day four on this ABCs of Gratitude train; and we're pulling into the 'D'-epot.

Today's letter of gratitude is 'D' and my entry for today is around the sensitive topic of money. Here is a little background on why I have chosen to share my gratitude for the 'dollar'.

Despite earning my allowance as a kid and working through high school and college, being 'financially fit' wasn't something that I started to think about until I turned 27. At that point in my life, my personal finances were a wreck. After three years of living off of credit cards (in one of the most expensive cities in the world) I had maxed out on two credit cards and felt completely overwhelmed. Struggling to understand how to get out of the hole I dug myself into, I vowed that I would never put myself in this position again. Fortunately, around this same time, LearnVest entered my life and changed my entire outlook on managing my personal finances.

Led by CEO, CFP, and author, Alexa von Tobel, LearnVest provides straight-forward tools, articles, and advice to "live your richest life". At a recent LearnVest Live event in New York, Alexa emphasized that Financial Planning is not just for the wealthy. In fact, planning and budgeting your finances is almost more important when you have less money--because you have to make sure that you do the most with each and every dollar you have. After working on rebuilding my financial foundation for almost three years, I could not agree more!

Since my dark finance days, I have made some major changes in order to live a meaningful life within my means. There are some sacrifices I have made, but I know that living debt-free and making my money work for ME, not living as a prisoner to careless spending, is worth every dollar NOT spent.
